How to Keep a Porta Potty Fresh at Your Event
A porta potty stays fresh at an event when there are enough units for the guest count, the units sit in shade away from food, and someone checks paper and sanitizer halfway through. Every event unit arrives washed, deodorized and stocked.

What causes porta potty odor at events?
Porta potty odor at events comes from 3 things: too few units for the crowd, direct afternoon sun on the roof, and doors left open. One unit per 50 guests for 4 hours, shade, and self-closing doors that stay shut handle most of it.
Heat raises odor fastest. On July and August events, place units on the shady side of a building or tree line.
What should the host check during the event?
The host should check each unit once halfway through: toilet paper, hand sanitizer, the door latch and the floor. Leave 2 spare rolls per unit in a nearby bin. A battery light inside helps after dark.
- Spare toilet paper rolls.
- A trash can outside, never inside, the unit.
- A sign from the gathering area to the units.
What should never go in the tank?
Nothing but toilet paper and waste should go in the tank. Wipes, paper towels, bottles and food damage the pump and can add a cleanup charge. A trash can just outside the door stops most of it.
Hand wash stations keep paper towels out of the toilet tank when guests have somewhere else to toss them.
