How many accessible porta potties does my event need?

An event needs at least 5 percent of portable toilets in each cluster to be wheelchair-accessible, and never fewer than 1, under the 2010 ADA Standards section 213.2. An event with 10 units in one area needs at least 1 accessible unit; an event with 30 units needs 2.

Source: 2010 ADA Standards, section 213.2. This is the legal minimum. Events with many older guests, such as church picnics and reunions, often rent 2. Check with your venue or permit office for its own rule; this page is not legal advice.

What makes a unit wheelchair-accessible?

A wheelchair-accessible unit has a ground-level floor with no step, a wide self-closing door, grab bars beside the seat, and a clear 60-inch diameter turning space inside. The seat sits at a lower, chair-friendly height.

We describe these units as built to ADA dimensions. Whether a full setup meets ADA rules also depends on where the unit sits: the path to it must be firm and level, with no curb or deep grass in the way. Set it on pavement near the parking area when possible.

Where should an accessible unit go?

An accessible porta potty belongs on the firmest, flattest spot closest to parking or the main gathering area. A level 8 × 8 foot pad works. Avoid slopes, soft grass, gravel deeper than 1 inch and any curb between the path and the door.

  • Church lots: the corner nearest the accessible parking spaces.
  • Parks: on the paved path edge, not in the field.
  • Homes: driveway, not the backyard.

Questions renters ask

Is the accessible unit ADA-compliant?

The unit is built to ADA dimensions. Full ADA compliance for an event also depends on the path and placement, so we place it on level ground near parking and recommend you confirm with your venue.

Can a family member with a walker use it at home?

The wider door, grab bars and ground-level floor help anyone with a walker, cane or limited balance. Many homeowners rent one during a remodel for that reason.

Does the accessible unit have a sink?

The accessible unit has hand sanitizer. Add a two-sided hand wash station beside it for soap and water.

Can I get one for a job site?

Job sites can rent accessible units for workers who need the extra room or for public-facing sites. Billing follows the same 28-day cycle.
