OSHA Porta Potty Requirements for Construction Sites and Farms

OSHA requires 1 toilet for 20 or fewer construction workers, then 1 seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers, under 29 CFR 1926.51(c) Table D-1. Farm field crews need 1 toilet and 1 handwashing facility per 20 workers within a quarter-mile walk, under 29 CFR 1928.110.

What does OSHA Table D-1 require on construction sites?

OSHA Table D-1 requires 1 toilet when 20 or fewer workers are on site, 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers when there are 20 or more, and 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 50 workers at 200 or more. Ohio and Pennsylvania private job sites follow this federal rule.

Ohio has no state OSHA plan for private employers, so federal OSHA covers private construction. Ohio public-sector employers fall under the state’s PERRP program. Pennsylvania private employers are also covered by federal OSHA. Confirm your project’s requirements with your safety lead; this guide is not legal advice.

Does OSHA require handwashing stations on job sites?

OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51(f) requires washing facilities on construction sites where workers apply paints, coatings, herbicides or insecticides, or handle other contaminants that can harm them. The facilities must be close to the work, kept clean, and supplied with water, soap and towels.

A two-sided hand wash station meets the setup. Our recommendation: 1 station for each work area where crews eat lunch, even when the rule does not strictly require it.

What are the OSHA toilet rules for farm field workers?

OSHA 29 CFR 1928.110 requires 1 toilet and 1 handwashing facility for every 20 field workers, located within a quarter-mile walk of each worker. Field crews of 10 or fewer working 3 hours or less a day, including travel, are exempt.

What are the accessible toilet rules for events?

The 2010 ADA Standards section 213.2 requires that where portable toilets are clustered at one location, at least 5 percent of them, and never fewer than 1, must be accessible. An accessible unit needs a 60-inch diameter turning space or a T-shaped turning space inside.

Questions renters ask

Can workers use a nearby restaurant instead of a porta potty?

OSHA lets mobile crews skip a fixed toilet only when transportation to nearby toilets is readily available. A fixed job site needs its own facilities.

Does OSHA say how often units must be cleaned?

OSHA requires sanitary facilities but does not set a weekly number. Weekly service is the standard practice we include; busy sites add visits.

Do separate toilets for men and women count?

Table D-1 counts seats and urinals, not genders. Sites with mixed crews often add a unit labeled for women.
