Where to Put a Porta Potty: A Placement Guide

The right porta potty spot is level, firm, within 25 feet of where the truck can park, about 50 feet from food, and away from windows that open. A standard unit fits a 48-inch gate. Good placement keeps the unit upright, serviceable and pleasant for guests.

What makes a good porta potty spot?

A good porta potty spot is level ground within 25 feet of the truck, with firm footing in rain. Driveways, alley pads, gravel lots and the corner of a parking lot are best. Lawns work when dry and flat.

  • Level within a couple of inches side to side.
  • No septic lids, sprinkler heads, gas meters or buried lines underneath.
  • No low branches over the roof.
  • Door facing away from tables, windows and the street.

How far from the house or food should it be?

A porta potty should sit about 50 feet from food tables and at least 10 feet from windows that open. For a backyard party, the side yard near the driveway usually works better than the middle of the lawn.

Wind across the Mahoning Valley mostly comes from the west and southwest, so place units on the east or northeast side of where people gather when you can.

What about slopes, hills and river valleys?

A sloped yard needs the unit at the flattest point, often the top of the driveway. In hilly towns along the Ohio River and in Pittsburgh’s neighborhoods, alley pads and garage aprons are the usual spots. We can shim small slopes but not steep ones.

Send a photo of the spot and the path from the street. The dispatcher will confirm fit before delivery.

Quick questions

Can the unit go on a deck or patio?

Patios at ground level work if the truck hose can reach. Raised decks are not used because of weight and spills.
